Q&A

a. The work by Carlos Cruz- Diez was most enjoyable. His whole design with the different colors and circles was well thought out.
b. Some of the roman statues were disturbing/funny to me. They would build this huge naked soldier and give him this tiny penis! Priceless.
c. I wouldn't mind making one of those 3D pictures that the artist did at the museum. It was very creative and everyone enjoyed it.

FINAL MARK MAKING PROJECT

Overall I think I did a great job on my project. The object I chose to work on went with the theme of the story and the way I decided to make my marks expressed my emotions in the story. Everything went hand in hand to me. I was trying to express anger in my work by being disobedient. That's why I used fire because the number one thing they tell you in elementary is DON'T PLAY WITH FIRE! Great use of negative space on some pictures. I would probably change the size and make it bigger and maybe the way I posted it on the wall. The other students felt the same way. Burn the cover a little more or keep it clean.

FINAL MAPPING PROJECT, GRADE IT!

For my mapping project i decided to take all the negative things said to me in high school and post it up in a very unique way. The negative comments range from, my family, my looks, sex, photography and many more. The main 1 that I wanted to focus on were the ones about my photography. Thats why I decided to put them in bold and do the whole project on photography negatives, especially since the name of the object and the theme go hand in hand.

FINAL METAPHOR PROJECT

The metaphor I decided to go with was WASTING MONEY. The cup tilting over was to describe the wasting part and the money... was the money.

PHOTO HOMEWORK

Photograph of someone I know taken by me

A. I took this photograph because I was getting paid to do this job and the time and location was perfect. I chose to keep this photograph because the young lady in it is beautiful and so is the background.

B. The whole vibe and emotion of this photograph is relaxed and happy! Fun in the sun basically. Both of our attitudes were positive and I came out with a powerful picture.

C. I will remember this photograph in 10 years because this was a very fun photo shoot for me.

  Photograph someone took of me

A. This photograph was taken because I needed a new picture for my business cards. I chose this picture because all of my cameras are in it and I look very handsome!

B. This is a very serious photograph. Even thought the photo was taken in a very creative way, you can still see the message that the photographer and the subject was trying to deliver.

C. I will remember this photograph in 10 years because it is all about me and what I love.

  Random picture

A. It looks like they were going to use this picture to advertise for something. No special reason why I decided to pick this picture for this assignment. It's not important to me.

B. You get a happy vibe from the photograph because it has great indoor lighting and the kid is smiling about something.

C. This is probably used for commercial use and I will not remember this picture in the next 10 MINUTES.

PROPOSAL 3

Getting my first pay check from my first job and feel great!

I would probably place some cash next to something that reminds me of my first job.

PROPOSAL 2

Learning how to drive...

Something that shows learning like a book and something that deals with a car.

PROPOSAL 1

SENT TO KATHY, DONT WANT IT ON THE INTERNET!

I will probably pick this one because I feel more confident about it and this one is the most interesting to me.

METAPHOR AND VISUAL METAPHOR

Metaphor is the concept of understanding one thing in terms of another. A metaphor is a figure of speech that constructs an analogy between two things or ideas; the analogy is conveyed by the use of a metaphorical word in place of some other word. For example: "Her eyes were glistening jewels".
Metaphor is or was also occasionally used to denote rhetorical figures of speech that achieve their effects via association, comparison or resemblance (e.g., antithesishyperbole,metonymy and simile, which are then all considered types of metaphor). Aristotle used both this sense and the regular, current sense above.[1]
The word metaphor derives from the 16th century Old French métaphore, in turn from the Latin metaphora, "carrying over", which is the latinisation of the Greek μεταφορά (metaphorá), “transfer”,[2] from μεταφέρω (metaphero), “to carry over”, “to transfer”,[3] itself a compound of μετά (meta), “between”[4] + φέρω (pherō), “to bear”, “to carry”.[5

A visual metaphor, also called a pictorial metaphor, is a metaphor in which something (the metaphor's "target") that is presented visually is compared to something that belongs to another category (the metaphor's "source") of things than the first, also presented visually. As in verbal metaphors (such as "football is war" or "the world is a stage"), at least one feature or association is "mapped" from the source to the target. Often, a whole set of (interrelated) features is mapped from source to target. Visual/pictorial metaphors are used often in advertising, but also in political cartoons and films. Many examples of visual/pictorial metaphor, as well as discussions of them, are discussed in my book Pictorial Metaphor in Advertising (Routledge 1996), which also contains references to the work of other authors who discuss metaphor in images and film, for instance the perception psychologist John Kennedy, the film scholar Trevor Whittock, and the film philosopher Noel Carroll.

TOPOGRAPHIC/MAGNETIC STUDIES

RESEARCH MOVEMENTS

Minimalism describes movements in various forms of art and design, especially visual art and music, where the work is stripped down to its most fundamental features. As a specific movement in the arts it is identified with developments in post-World War II Western Art, most strongly with American visual arts in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Prominent artists associated with this movement include Donald JuddJohn McLaughlinAgnes MartinDan FlavinRobert MorrisAnne Truitt, and Frank Stella. It is rooted in the reductive aspects ofModernism, and is often interpreted as a reaction against Abstract expressionism and a bridge to Postmodern art practices.

Postminimalism is an art term coined by Robert Pincus-Witten in 1971[1] used in various artistic fields for work which is influenced by, or attempts to develop and go beyond, the aesthetic of minimalism. The expression is used specifically in relation to music and the visual arts, but can refer to any field using minimalism as a critical reference point.

Process art is an artistic movement as well as a creative sentiment and world view where the end product of art and craft, the objet d’art, is not the principal focus. The 'process' in process art refers to the process of the formation of art: the gathering, sorting, collating, associating, and patterning. Process art is concerned with the actual doing; seeing the art as pure human expression. Process art often entails an inherent motivation, rationale, and intentionality. Therefore, art is viewed as a creative journey or process, rather than as a deliverable or end product.

Arte Povera is a style of modern art. The term was introduced in Italy during the period of upheaval at the end of the 1960s, when artists were taking a radical stance. Artists began attacking the values of established institutions of government, industry, and culture, and even questioning whether art as the private expression of the individual still had an ethical reason to exist. Italian art critic Germano Celant organized two exhibitions in 1967 and 1968, followed by an influential book called Arte Povera, promoting the notion of a revolutionary art, free of convention, the power of structure, and the market place. Although Celant attempted to encompass the radical elements of the entire international scene, the term properly centered on a group of Italian artists who attacked the corporate mentality with an art of unconventional materials and style. They often used found objects in their works. Other early exponents of radical change in the visual arts include proto Arte Povera artists: Antoni Tàpies and the Dau al Set movement, and Lucio Fontana and Spatialism.

REVEREND ETHAN ACRES

Reverend Ethan Acres

I am more of a visual man so I could not just sit here and read nine pages about Reverend Ethan Acres. I had to actually see him in action. So I pulled up some YouTube videos of Reverend Acres to get a better understanding of him and his work. Now in the book, well at least the part I read, they describe him as an, “ evangelical preacher in a Christian church.” A man that, “ abounds with love for imperfect people and for a perfect God.” That part grabbed my attention and kept me interested. Also the fact that he is a preacher that lives in Las Vegas, the capital of sex and flesh and gluttony and sin, as the book states, forced me to keep going.
I love the face that he is a man of God and is an artist both at the same time. That is the best way to show God that you are thankful for the talent that he has blessed you with, by using it and giving him all of the glory at the same time. But once I looked at the YouTube videos I realized someting, I do not take him serious! He looks like a comedian that does not get any laughs. The video I saw was, “Church of The Holy Fool: Victoria Reynolds”. The name goes perfect with the performance because it looks like a Fool is bouncing around in a Church. The only part I enjoyed was when he was quoting Holy Bible verses.
I think that his outfit and voice is what disappointed me the most about Reverend Ethan Acres. I tried to find more videos of him but there was a sound problem with them so that did not work. I like the idea of him trying to mix preaching and art together at the same time, but I do not like the way that he pulled it off. Honestly, I feel a little insulted and offended. If you look and listen closely at what is happening in the video, it seem like he is making this wonderful idea one big joke. That part does not sit well with me. His sculptures and paintings seem to have more meaning than his performance. I do not consider what Reverend Ethan Acres does to be art. I believe that he is only in it for the money and he tries to increase his income by giving his art a church theme. I respect the fact that he is trying to make an honest living, but I do not respect the way he is trying to do it. Maybe if he only preached the word of God and did something else with his art, I would feel better about him. Another good idea is, if he based his art only on the Holy Bible and let someone else do the preaching. Now that is a show that I would mind going to. At the end of the day my opinion does not even matter, only God can judge you. I wish Reverend Ethan Acres the best of luck with his career.

STORY LINE

SIGHT
The different things in the classroom, students, supplies and teacher.

SOUND
The sound of the teacher’s voice and students laughter.

SMELL
The smell of the classroom, restroom, urine, stinky James.

TOUCH
The booger, crayons, carpet, and the students.

TASTE
The booger, cookies, and the carpet.

BALANCE
Keeping myself in line with the other students and not drifting off.

TEMPERATURE
            No temperature.

PAIN
The pain of the crayon up my nose, the pain my nose had to deal with from standing behind stinky James, internal pain from knowing that I can’t lead the line.

PRESSURE
The pressure that the girl put on me when she asked for my cookie.

MOTION
Shoving the crayon, moving my tongue on the carpet, running out of the restroom, and my vision of the class walking out like a NFL team.

DIRECTION
The directions that the teacher gave the students.

TEMPORAL
James smelling like recess 24/7, and the fact that the story took place when I was in elementary shows my age and the time period.

The mood of the story ranges from happy, to sad, to anger, to depressing, to disturbing, just as the emotions do.

11. Snow melting
12. Fire spreading

Q&A

1.     I’m better at visualizing objects than people. People are harder because you have to try to focus on the details and facial features that particular person own. Certain objects you have to do the same but not for most.
2.     I am better at 3D objects than 2D. I feel that way because only one object on my list was 2D and I didn’t have a problem with any of the 3D.
3.     I see most of my images floating in front of a black background.
4.     All of my images appear in front of my eyes.
5.     This is important to me because as a photographer I have to have a great eye for things. I have to picture it in my mind before it is actually there. That will set me apart from many other photographers.
